Microsoft Defender for Cloud
Cloud and workloads

Release Notes

In brief

On October 20, 2026, the expanded server security experience will support automated and manual onboarding for Azure, Azure Arc-enabled, Windows, Linux, and on-premises servers. Cloud security plan management will also become available in the Defender portal, including DWU cost tracking and eligible 30-day trials.

What Defender admins need to know

Administrators can manage cloud security plans in the Defender portal; Azure portal settings become view-only, and migrated subscriptions use DWU-based billing. Existing Defender for Endpoint installations do not require reinstallation or migration.

Expanded server onboarding experience

October 20, 2026

The new Defender server security experience expands to include onboarding guidance for Azure and on-premises servers, building on the investigation and access management capabilities released on October 6.

With this update, you can:

  • Onboard supported Azure virtual machines and Azure Arc-enabled servers automatically through Defender for Servers.
  • Choose a supported deployment method to onboard Windows and Linux servers manually to Defender for Endpoint.
  • Connect on-premises servers to Defender for Servers by using Azure Arc or Direct onboarding.
  • Verify server onboarding and review available offboarding methods.

Servers already running Defender for Endpoint don't require reinstallation or migration to maintain their existing protection.

Cloud security plan management in the Defender portal

October 20, 2026

Cloud security plan management is scheduled to become available in public preview in the Microsoft Defender portal for Azure commercial environments on October 20, 2026.

With this experience, you can:

  • Connect Azure subscriptions and management groups to cloud security in the Defender portal.
  • Enable and manage cloud security plans globally across connected environments or configure plans for selected management groups and subscriptions.
  • Estimate and track Cloud security costs, including cost under the new billing model, where usage is measured in Defender Workload Units (DWUs).
  • Start a 30-day free trial for eligible cloud security plans when enabling plans.

When plan management moves to the Defender portal, plan configuration will be managed in the Defender portal and become view-only in the Azure portal. Migrated subscriptions will use DWU-based billing.
