Exempt resources at scale - Microsoft Defender for Cloud | Microsoft Learn

In brief

The documentation adds steps for creating and managing exemptions through Exposure Management > Policies > Exemption, including scope, conditions, justification, duration, and review. Only Defender-managed environments and assets can be selected, and updates to findings and posture metrics may be delayed.

What Defender admins need to know

Administrators can apply documented exemption decisions across selected Defender-managed assets and should use the narrowest appropriate scope.

Summaries are generated from the documentation change itself.

Microsoft Defender for Cloud shows affected resources through recommendations. Sometimes, a resource doesn't need to be included, or a recommendation appears in a scope where it isn't relevant.

For example, Defender for Cloud might not track a remediation process, or a specific subscription might not need a recommendation. Organizations might also accept risk for specific resources or recommendations. In these cases, create exemptions at scale to:

Microsoft Defender shows affected assets through security recommendations. Sometimes, an asset doesn't need remediation, or a recommendation isn't relevant for a particular scope.

Organizations might also accept risk for specific assets or recommendations. In these cases, create exemptions at scale to apply a documented exemption decision across the required Defender-managed environments or assets.

Create exemptions at scale

To tailor your security posture, create exemptions for recommendations that aren't applicable or are already mitigated.

To create exemptions at scale:

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Defender portal.

  2. Go to Exposure Management > Policies > Exemption.

  3. Select Create Exemption.

  4. Enter the exemption details and select the environments or assets to which the exemption applies.

Only Defender-managed environments and assets can be selected. Use the narrowest scope possible to represent the approved risk decision.

  5. Define the conditions for the exemption, such as specific recommendations, recommendation categories, or risk criteria.

Carefully review whether the condition is static or dynamic. Dynamic conditions can automatically apply to future findings that match the defined criteria.

  6. Enter the business justification and supporting evidence, and define the exemption duration.

  7. Review the complete exemption configuration, including the selected scope and affected findings.

  8. Select Create.

After the exemption is submitted, Microsoft Defender processes the exemption and updates matching findings. Changes to finding status, exposure calculations, and related posture metrics might not be reflected immediately.

To view or manage existing exemptions, return to Exposure Management > Policies > Exemption. You can edit or delete an exemption as needed.
