Microsoft Defender for Identity
Identity protection

Whats New

In brief

The documentation now states that v3.x sensor activation without Defender for Endpoint is temporarily unsupported in government clouds. It also documents a preview restriction on installing v2.x sensors in new workspaces starting October 2026.

What Defender admins need to know

Administrators planning new workspaces should plan to use the supported v3.x onboarding path; government-cloud deployments must account for the Defender for Endpoint requirement.

Summaries are generated from the documentation change itself.

Sensor v2.x installation restriction for new workspaces (Preview)

The sensor v2.x installation restriction for new workspaces is in preview. Starting in October 2026, Defender for Identity will restrict sensor v2.x installation in new workspaces. In these workspaces, sensor v3.x is the supported onboarding option for eligible servers running Windows Server 2019 or later. You can onboard sensor v2.x only to servers running Windows Server 2016 or earlier.

Automatic sensor v3.x activation and Windows auditing by default

Automatic sensor v3.x activation and automatic Windows auditing apply only to organizations with an active license that includes Microsoft Defender for Identity.
