Governance Relationships
In brief
The documentation now explains how to grant Microsoft Sentinel permissions to delegated remote tenant groups through Defender URBAC, including required permissions, role assignment, and workspace selection. It also retains the resource-group assignment option and clarifies management-plane versus data-plane access.
What Defender admins need to know
Administrators can use the updated steps to configure Sentinel access through Defender URBAC and identify any separate data-plane permissions required.
Summaries are generated from the documentation change itself.

Configure tenant governance permissions for Microsoft Sentinel
Security groups used in the relationship template are synchronized to the governed tenant as "remote tenant groups." You can assign these groups to Microsoft Sentinel roles in the governed tenant to enable multitenant management capabilities. You can assign these groups to Defender URBAC or Azure Resource Manager (ARM) resources to enable Microsoft Sentinel management capabilities.
Assigning Microsoft Sentinel roles enables multitenant management features including:
- Content distribution
- Direct management through the Defender portal
Option 1 - Assign permissions with URBAC
To create custom roles in Microsoft Defender unified RBAC, you must be assigned one of the following roles or permissions:
- At least Security Administrator in Microsoft Entra ID.
- All Authorization permissions assigned in Microsoft Defender Unified RBAC.
Follow these steps to grant Microsoft Sentinel permissions to your delegated remote tenant group.
In the governed tenant, sign in to the Defender Portal
Navigate to Setup & Configuration > Permissions.
Select Roles.
Select or Create the role you want to assign (Map Sentinel roles to Defender URBAC).
Create a new assignment or edit an existing one.

Add the Remote tenant groups you want to grant access to Sentinel.
On the Data Collections select the workspaces in scope.

Select Add to complete the assignment.
Option 2 - Assign permissions to a resource group
The Microsoft Sentinel Azure RBAC assignments described in this section grant management-plane access to the selected resources. They don't automatically grant data-plane access, such as permission to read Azure Storage blob data or Azure Key Vault secrets. Assign any required data-plane roles separately and follow least-privilege principles.
