Deploy Defender Identity
In brief
Windows Server 2019 or later AD FS, AD CS, and Microsoft Entra Connect servers are now documented as supporting sensor v3.x onboarding with or without Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
What Defender admins need to know
Administrators can use either Defender for Endpoint onboarding or the sensor v3.x onboarding package for these eligible servers. No mandatory action is stated.
Summaries are generated from the documentation change itself.

The sensor version you deploy depends on the server role and operating system. Use the following table to select the recommended deployment. For supported v2.x platforms, see v2.x server requirements. Review the migration prerequisites separately before upgrading an existing v2.x sensor.
For eligibleEligible domain controllerscontrollers, AD FS, AD CS, and Microsoft Entra Connect servers running Windows Server 2019 or later, later support sensor v3.x supports onboardingx. You can onboard these servers with or without Microsoft Defender for Endpoint deployment. Other eligible identity-role servers require Defender for Endpoint onboarding.

| Server configuration | Server operating system | Recommended deployment | Onboarding options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any supported server type | Windows Server 2019 or later with the September 2026 or later cumulative update | Defender for Identity sensor v3.x | For servers onboarded to Defender for Endpoint, activate sensor v3.x directly. |
| Any supported server type | Windows Server 2016 or earlier | Defender for Identity sensor v2.x | Install the sensor v2.x package. |
Defender for Identity supports sensor v3.x and sensor v2.x in the same workspace. For example, you might deploy sensor v3.x on servers running Windows Server 2019 or later and sensor v2.x on servers running Windows Server 2016 or earlier.
Before you activate the Defender for Identity sensor v3.x, note that v3.x:
Supports onboarding through Defender for Endpoint. Eligible
domain controllersservers can instead use the sensor v3.x onboarding package.Doesn't support VPN integration.
Doesn't support syslog notifications.
Has limitations working with Azure ExpressRoute. For more information, see Azure ExpressRoute for Microsoft 365. Choose the sensor deployment flow that matches the server configuration:
If the server is onboarded to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, activate sensor v3.x from the Sensor management tab.
If an eligible
domain controllerserver isn't onboarded to Defender for Endpoint, download and run the sensor v3.x onboarding packagedownload and run the sensor v3.x onboarding package. If an eligible domain controller already runs sensor v2.x, migrate the sensor to v3.x. In-place migration isn't yet available for servers that aren't domain controllers.
If the server supports sensor v2.x only, install sensor v2.x.
