Defender For Cloud Defender Portal

In brief

The documentation now describes connecting Azure commercial environments at subscription or management-group level and configuring Defender for Cloud plans for selected or all connected environments. AWS, GCP, and unsupported Azure environments must still be onboarded through the Azure portal.

What Defender admins need to know

Administrators can use the Defender portal to manage connected Azure environments and plans, while continuing to use the Azure portal for environments and capabilities not yet supported there.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of Microsoft Defender for Cloud's integration with the Defender portal, covering key features, benefits, and capabilities available in this unified security experience.

Overview

Microsoft Defender for Cloud (MDC) is now deeply integrated into the Defender portal at security.microsoft.com and part of the broader Microsoft Security eco-system. With threat protection already deeply embedded into the Defender portal, this integration adds posture management—bringing together a complete cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) solution in one unified experience. This native-integration eliminates silos so security teams can see and act on threats across all cloud, hybrid, and code environments - all from one place and eliminates the need to switch between tools and portals.

The cloud-agnostic expansion supportsDefender portal provides a unified view of security data across Azure, AWS, and GCP environments. In this public preview, you can also connect Azure commercial environments and manage their Defender for Cloud plans in the Defender portal.

Azure environments can be connected at the subscription or management group level. You can then configure plan coverage for selected environments or apply a global configuration across current and future connected environments. When an Azure subscription moves to Defender-based plan management, its usage and billing are based on Defender Workload Units (DWUs).

Once this is complete, users can consume the data in the Defender portal. In a later phase, users will also be able to manage and configure settings directly in Defender, enabling them to perform all MDC end-to-end use cases within a single portal.
