Machine Tags
In brief
The documentation now clarifies that the DeviceTagging registry key supports only one tag in the Group value. Tags assigned through other methods aren't written there, so the registry value may not show all tags on a device.
What Defender admins need to know
Use another supported tagging method to assign multiple tags, and don't rely on the Group registry value as a complete tag inventory.

Performance notes
- Each device can have multiple tags. However, the number of tags that you can configure might depend on the tagging method. For example, registry-based tagging on Windows supports one tag.
- Dynamic tags update approximately every hour.
- There might be some latency between the time a tag is added to a device and its availability in the devices list and device page.
- Large numbers of tags don't significantly affect performance.
Note
- Device group creation is supported in Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 and Plan 2.
- When you configure a device tag by using the
DeviceTaggingregistry key, you can specify only one tag in theGroupvalue. To assign multiple tags to a device, use another supported tagging method. - Tags assigned through other methods, such as the Microsoft Defender portal, aren't written to the
Groupregistry value. Therefore, don't use the registry key to determine all tags currently assigned to a device.
