Get started withStart using Microsoft Security Exposure Management

This article describes how to start working with theThe Microsoft Security Exposure Management dashboard in the unified Microsoft Defender portal.portal gives security teams a consolidated, action-oriented view of exposure risk. It consolidates signals from cloud resources and devices, combining internet exposure vulnerabilities, security misconfigurations, and broader risk factors into a single experience, and organizes work around two core actions: Resolve Now and Monitor Exposure.

AccessingAccess Microsoft Security Exposure Management

Microsoft Security Exposure Management is now fully integrated into the Microsoft Defender portal at security.microsoft.com. All Exposure Management functions are accessible through the unified portal under the Exposure Management section in the navigation.

Prerequisites for access

  • Ensure you have appropriate licensing: MSEM features are available with Microsoft 365 E5, certain E3 with add-ons, or Defender suite licenses
  • Verify you have the required permissions: A dedicated Exposure Management role provides granular access, or you can use traditional roles like Security Admin or Global Admin
  • Enable any preview features if needed, such as external data connectors, which are currently in public preview with separate consumption-based pricing

Navigation in the unified portal

Navigate to Exposure Management in the Microsoft Defender portal to access:

  • Overview dashboard
  • Attack surface management tools
  • Critical asset management
  • Exposure insights and recommendations
  • Data connectors configuration
  • Vulnerability management cababilities

Reviewing security exposure state

On the Exposure Management > Overview dashboard,to open the dashboard.

Before you canstart, review the overall state of your organizational security exposure.

Use the dashboard as a starting pointPrerequisites and support for a snapshot of organizational posturelicensing, permissions, and exposure, and drill down to details as needed.

You can filter the list of affected devices based on their scope, ensuring that data presentation is aligned with your specific needs. The filter selection persists even when switching between Exposure Management experiences, allowing you to maintain you preferred view and focus on specific devices without reapplying filters.

Initiative scores reflect the selected scope, whether defined by the admin or adjusted by the end user, ensuring users see accurate and relevant scores based on their access scope.environment requirements.

ConnectingResolve Now

The Resolve Now section surfaces prioritized, actionable items across three categories, focused on internet-exposed and business-critical assets:

  • Patch — Software updates that address known vulnerabilities, prioritized by internet exposure and business criticality.
  • Mitigate — Risks you can't immediately patch (primarily zero-day vulnerabilities) with suggested compensating controls.
  • Fix — Misconfigurations and security weaknesses, particularly around internet-exposed cloud assets that increase your external securityattack surface.

Select any item to drill into the details and asset management productsfollow the linked remediation workflows.

Monitor Exposure

To get the most out of SecurityThe Monitor Exposure Management, connect your external security and asset management products.

By integrating these products, you can enhance visibility and gain deeper insights into your security posture. Data connectors allow for seamless data flow and aggregation, providing section provides a more comprehensive view of potential vulnerabilities and threats.

Review assets

Get a quickreal-time view of your organization's exposed assets.external attack surface and security posture across domains.

Internet Exposed Resources

You can see onboarded devices, discovered devices not yet onboarded, internet The Internet Exposed Resources table shows the breakdown of your internet-facing assets by type: cloud assets, devices, and cloudshadow resources. Use this view to quickly understand the external attack surface where your assets are visible to the internet.

Domain initiative scores

Knowing what is exposed helps youDomain initiative scores show your organization's current security posture as a percentage versus a target score, across five domains: Code, Endpoint, Cloud, Identity, and SaaS. Use these scores to address asset exposure risks.

Review key initiatives

Key initiatives show initiatives that are marked as favorites in the initiatives page, track progress and any newly added recommended initiatives.

Select an individual key initiative to drill down. You can also navigate to all initiatives.

You can see the current exposure value, a 14 day change trend, and associated recommendations.

Drilling down into an individual security metric takes youattention to its metric page. You can also access all metrics.

Review assets in the map

Review and manage critical assets

The Critical asset summary shows you how many critical assets you have and how many have attack paths that put them at risk.

From here you can view and manage critical assets and devices.

In Critical asset management, you can manage the criticality level of assets identified by Security Exposure Management, and create custom classification rules to detect other critical assets.
