The following terms explain how an automation becomes one or more simulation runs:
- Simulation automation: The reusable configuration that contains payload, user, training, notification, schedule, and launch settings.
- Eligible launch: A point in the configured window when the schedule permits the service to create a run. Eligibility means that the automation can attempt to create a run. The final number of runs can vary based on schedule constraints, payload eligibility requirements, and run-creation outcomes.
- Simulation run: An individual simulation created by the automation. Each run has one selected social engineering technique and one selected payload.
- Payload selection: The selection of one payload when a run is created. Multiple selected payloads provide a pool for different runs. They don't distribute different payloads among recipients in the same run.
- User assignment: The decision to distribute users across runs or include all selected users in every run.
- Delivery batch: A group used to stagger send times. Delivery batches don't create runs or select payloads.
- Region-aware delivery: Delivery scheduling based on the user's current time zone setting in Outlook on the web.
The automation uses the following execution lifecycle:
- The automation schedule determines whether a simulation run is eligible to be created.
- When a run is created, the service selects one social engineering technique and one payload for that run.
- The service assigns users to the run based on the Target all selected users in every simulation run setting.
- The selected payload is used for all users assigned to that run.
- Region-aware delivery and randomized send times are applied to message delivery.
- Delivery batches stagger when messages are sent. They don't select more payloads.
The execution flow is: automation configuration, schedule eligibility, simulation run creation, technique and payload selection, user assignment, delivery scheduling, and message delivery. Payload selection occurs once per run. Delivery scheduling occurs afterward.
Supported scenarios and limitations
Use a simulation automation to:
- Run a sequence of phishing simulations from one configuration.
- Vary techniques or payloads between simulation runs.
- Distribute users across runs or include all selected users in every run.
- Use randomized or fixed schedules.
- Align delivery with users' time zones.
- Stagger message delivery.
Simulation automations don't provide:
- A guarantee that a randomized schedule creates the configured maximum number of runs.
- A different payload for each recipient in one run.
- A different payload for each randomized send-time batch.
- A guarantee that small target populations receive messages at visibly different times.
- Detailed diagnostics for every potential launch opportunity that doesn't result in a simulation run.
Create simulation automations
On the Simulation schedule page, select one of the following values:
- Randomized: The service chooses eligible launch times within the configured schedule. The maximum number of simulations is an upper bound, not a guaranteed run count.
- Fixed: Simulations launch according to the configured daily, weekly, or monthly recurrence.
The following table can help you choose a schedule:

The following examples show how run count, payload selection, user assignment, and delivery batching interact:

Review simulation automation
On the Review simulation automation page, you can review the details of your simulation automation.
Before you submit the automation, verify the following settings:
- Select Fixed for predictable recurrence or Randomized for an upper-bound schedule.
- Confirm that the schedule contains enough eligible days for the desired maximum.
- Treat the randomized value as a maximum, not an exact count.
- Confirm that payloads match the selected techniques and language requirements.
- Confirm that enough eligible payloads exist for the intended cross-run uniqueness.
- Decide whether users are distributed across runs or included in every run.
- Confirm whether region-aware delivery and randomized send times are required.
- Use the settings interaction table and examples to predict run count, payload selections, user participation, and delivery behavior.
You can select Edit in each section to modify the settings within the section. Or you can select Back or the specific page in the wizard.
When you're finished on the Review simulation automation, select Submit.
You can view the simulation reports for automated campaigns in the Simulations tab. Click on the name of the simulation, having a prefix of AutomatedSimulation_ and automation name available under the column Created by. To view the report click anywhere in the simulation row other than the check box next to the name.
Troubleshoot simulation automations
Use the following guidance to compare observed results with the configured schedule and launch settings:
- Fewer runs than the randomized maximum: Check the configured start and end dates, eligible days, whether selected payloads match the selected techniques and configured language and filtering requirements, and run history. If the completed window and available run history don't explain the lower count, preserve the observed configuration and timestamps while you continue the investigation.
- All users received the same payload: Check how many runs were created. One run means one payload for all users in that run. For multiple runs, compare the payload selected for each run. Don't use randomized send-time batches to infer payload selection.
- Users received messages at the same or a similar time: Check Randomize send times, population size, documented batch size, region-aware delivery, user time zone settings, and whether the 12-hour delivery window is complete. Randomized send times stagger delivery but don't guarantee a unique time for every recipient.
- Automation shows Completed but an expected run is missing: Compare the automation status, next launch time, run history, expected occurrence, and actual simulation creation time. If the status or next-launch value changes before the expected run appears, or a run is created substantially after its fixed occurrence, record the observed status, next-launch value, run history, and timestamps. More investigation might be required when the observed run history can't be reconciled with the configured schedule and documented behavior.
- A selected payload wasn't used: Compare the number of created runs with the number and eligibility of selected payloads and the Unique payloads setting. A payload can remain unused when fewer runs are created than selected payloads.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ) for simulation automations
If you select Target all selected users in every simulation run on the Launch details page, all targeted users are part of every simulation that's created by the simulation automation.
Each created simulation run selects one technique and one payload. All users assigned to that run receive the selected payload. Selecting multiple payloads provides a pool for different runs. It doesn't send different payloads to users within one run.
How does the Randomize option on the Simulation schedule page work?
The Randomize option on the Simulation schedule page optimally selects a day within the start date and end date range to launch simulations.
With a randomized schedule, the maximum number of simulations is between 1 and 10. How does this work?
The Max number of simulations value is the maximum numberupper limit of runs that the automation can be created by this automation.create. Does Randomize send times select a payload for every delivery batch?
No. Randomize send times is applied after the run and payload are created. Delivery batches stagger send timing only.
If I select eight payloads and set the maximum to one, how many payloads are used?
One payload is selected for the one created run. All users assigned to that run receive the selected payload.
Which schedule should I choose for one simulation every day?
Use a Fixed recurrence. A Randomized schedule doesn't guarantee a daily launch or an exact run count.
